Why Your Body Feels Like it is Not Working (and what may really be happening).

If your body feels like it is not working and you are feeling exhausted no matter what you try, I want to offer a different way of looking at this.

For many women I work with, it is not that their body is “failing”. It is that their body has been holding years of stress, pressure, responsibility, and pushing through.

Over time, the nervous system can become stuck in survival mode, where exhaustion becomes constant and the body no longer responds in the way it used to.

I know it can feel like your body isn’t working, but that is not what is really happening.

When exhaustion and stress start to feel constant

You may have tried different practitioners, medications, hormones, supplements, lifestyle changes, or new routines.

And still, it does not quite shift in a lasting way.

Your energy may feel inconsistent. Your sleep unsettled. Your body not responding the way it used to.

There can be a sense of trying hard to get back to “normal,” but not quite landing there.

You might notice you pick up on a lot, feel things strongly, and often hold space for others.

Over time, you may begin to notice something important. You have been giving more energy outward than inward.

And underneath that awareness, a quiet thought can begin to form:

Something in me is out of balance.

A small moment to notice

Before we go further, just pause here for a moment.

When you think about your body right now… do you feel like you are fully in it?

Or slightly disconnected from it?

There is no right answer here. Just noticing.

This simple awareness is often the first step back into connection.

The belief that can show up

It can start to feel like your body is broken, or that it will not heal.

That is a very human response when things feel stuck.

But it is not the truth of what is happening.

What your body has really been holding in survival mode

When I look beneath what is happening, it is rarely just physical.

Your body has been holding years of pressure to keep everything going, responsibility for others, emotions you have not felt safe to express, and a pattern of not letting people down.

Many women I work with are deeply empathic and intuitive. They feel everything. They sense everything.

As this continues, they begin to carry what was never theirs to hold.

They absorb, hold, and soften things for others without realising how much it costs them.

Without boundaries that feel safe, the body becomes the place where all of this is stored.

A simple place to begin

If you are reading this and recognising yourself, here is something small you can start with.

Notice this:

What is one belief your body has been holding?

Something like:
“I have to keep going no matter what”
“I have to keep showing up for everyone else, even if I’m exhausted”
“My body does not work properly anymore”

You do not need to change it or fix it. Just noticing it is enough to start with.

Because a belief is not truth. It is a thought that has been repeated for a long time.

And when you begin to see it clearly, something softens.

You are no longer inside the belief. You are observing it.

And that creates space.

Why doing more does not work in burnout and stress

At this stage, the natural response is to try harder.

Another supplement. Another practitioner. Another approach.

Something that finally “fixes it.”

But healing does not respond to more effort alone.

When we only focus on the physical body, we miss the deeper layers that are actually driving what is happening.

Your mind, emotions, energy, and body are one system.

If one part is overwhelmed, the whole system feels it.

Nothing changes instantly. But something begins to change in how you relate to your body.

And that is often the first real shift.

This is why doing more can keep you stuck, even when you are doing everything right.

What begins to change

When we start working together, sometimes the first shift may not be what you expect.

It is not about fixing everything immediately.

It is a sense of coming back into yourself.

You begin to understand what your body has been communicating.

You feel more steady in your own system.

Things that used to overwhelm you begin to soften.

There is more space in your mind. More calm in your body. Less internal noise.

And then you start to feel more present again. More like yourself.

Healing is not about forcing the body to change.

It is the release of what it has been carrying.

A final thought

You are not broken.

Your body has been doing its best to hold what life has asked of you.

And there comes a point where it begins to ask for something different.

Not more effort. More understanding.

You are not separate from your healing.

You are at the centre of it.

If this resonated

If something in this feels familiar, you do not have to figure it out on your own. So many women are quietly moving through this same experience, not realising there is another way.

If you felt something shift as you read this, or a quiet sense of recognition, this is the work I guide women through.

People also ask

Why does my body feel like it is not working?

This can happen when the nervous system has been under long-term stress and the body has shifted into survival mode. In this state, energy, sleep, and normal body function can feel disrupted, even when you are doing everything right.

Why am I exhausted all the time even when I rest?

Ongoing exhaustion is often linked to a system that is still running in stress mode. When the body does not feel safe enough to fully come out of survival mode, rest alone is not always enough to restore energy.

Can stress make your body feel like it is not working properly?

Yes. Long-term stress can affect hormones, sleep, energy, digestion, and overall regulation of the body. Over time, the system can feel overloaded and less responsive.

What does it mean when your body is in survival mode?

Survival mode is when the nervous system is focused on coping and getting through, rather than repair and restoration. This can lead to fatigue, overwhelm, emotional sensitivity, and feeling disconnected from your body.

How do you support a body that feels overwhelmed and exhausted?

The first step is not doing more, but gently understanding what your system has been carrying. A big part of this work is creating space for the body to release what it has been holding over time, including stored stress, emotional patterns, old experiences, and the impact of certain relationships or situations.

Supporting the nervous system, easing pressure, and allowing the body to soften can be a starting point for change.
